Prime Minister Rajoy has stated that if they (the Generalitat) try to continue with the proposed referendum he will prevent it by legal measures.

He has little option really, but you can bet your life that that will provoke the extremists further - up to and including terrorism I forsee.

Despite the failure of ETA to achieve anything. Who was it who said "Those who fail to learn the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them?".
There used to be a Catalan nationalist terrorist movement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_Lliure). It was rather less effective than ETA.

Sorry for the delay - ¡más vale tarde que nunca! My wife's sister's husband was an official of it! He spent a great deal of time as an honoured guest of the Policía Armada and Guardia Civil in their luxurious accommodation in Via Layetana!

He still receives a handsome pension by way of recompense.
