Mortgage or loan

I ve asked my bank for a mortgage / loan because I want to buy a house.
I really find both right. If there is only one possibility could anybody explain why?

A loan for a house is usually called a mortgage.

But you apply for a "mortgage loan" then you pay your loan or your mortgage.
