Hmm, maybe "to wax" meaning "to become" is Old/Middle English, but since I've read it so many times it sounds natural to me. :eek:

Yeah, it sounds very natural to me, too, but then I read English from the 17th century quite often.
Aside from the usage you gave, the moon is said to wax or to wane as it goes through its cycle.
To wax = to grow larger in size
To wane = to grow smaller in size
