according to google translate "me habló" is "I spoke"...but if I understand correctly "me" in Spanish is more like "to me"...as in, I was told... or more literally "it was spoken to me". Is that it?

Correct.
Me habló = she/he spoke to me
I spoke = (yo) hablé
It was spoken to me = se me habló
I was told = se me dijo
