Does anyone know if this name translates to English.

Onofre means 'defender of peace'. Humphrey is a close cousin (meaning 'peaceful warrior'). Don't forget its German and Italian form (Onofrio). This is a surname.

It must be a surname and a given name then, because I know someone named Onofre and it's his given name.

I'm familiar with Humphrey (who isn't? Play it again, Sam...), but I had never heard the name Onofre before. Is it common on your side of the pond?:?::?::confused:

Well, not really. On the other hand Onofrio is a common Italian first name around, and D'Ofrio is a surname I have heard. In Madrid, I passed a bake shop called El Horno de San Onofre. I know that saint names usually translate, but Onofre always puzzled me until Rusty cleared it up.

Thanks, Poli. Do you remember where that baker's was? Now that you say it, it sounds slightly familiar.

No, it's not a common name.

El Horno de San Onofre segun Yahoo está ubicado en Hortaleza cerca de La Gran Via, pero estoy seguro que hay otro mas arriba la colina en una calle angota entre Fuencarral y Hortaleza que es más viejo. Francamente La Mallorquina es mejor.
I think there's an actor Vincent D'onofrio.

¡Sí! Fue por eso que dije que Onofrio era un apellido.

Seguro que he pasado por delante mil veces, pero no me acuerdo. La Mallorquina me encanta, sobre todo las trufas.:)
