A similar thing happened to my daughter. When she went to nusery school she spoke only Spanish.
Then the lady that ran the school yelled at the kids if they spoke Spanish.
Now when my wife speaks to her in Spanish she answers in English.
Then she married a native Spanish speaker whose parents and many relatives only spoke
Spanish. Also my daughter took 4 years of Spanish in high school and
a few years in college. When she worked at various jobs she needed to be able to
speak Spanish.

That what I did with my method, acquired the language, by utilizing all I knew in my native language and without the structure that grammar wants to impose.
