Are my sentences grammatical?

-Invasion is often said to be bad, but is not always so. For example, the British committed/performed/made a selfish act of invading this country, but before retreating/going back/receding to their own country, they gave democracy to people/ the people of this country, overseeing/ensuring that elections were made/held/undertaken in a peaceful and fluent manner. If the British had not invaded this country, it might still be living in the dark, with warlords fighting/jostling with each other for power. An act started with a bad intention/bad intentions was made/turned good in the end.
