This summer I'm taking Arabic classes at the local mosque, but I've recently purchased a few books for myself which happen to be materials for Swahili learning.

I'm aware the Arabic language had influence upon the Spanish Language as well as the Swahili language, but I was curious if there are any Arabic-derived cognates between the two languages. Are they significant, or are they rather weakly distributed between the two languages?

If anyone has a clue, I'd appreciate their knowledge.

I don't know Swahili, but am quite familiar with Castillian. Although most of the language is derived from Latin, many words also have Arabic origins.
Check a dictionary for words that start with the letters al. There are quite a few, and the great majority of them come from Arabic. You can check a Swahili dictionary for similar words, and they would be the cognates you seek.

There is a list of Arabic-derived Spanish words here (http://forums.tomisimo.org/showpost.php?p=137908) (look at post #13). See if any are similar to Swahili.
