Generally speaking, what's the difference between 'ability' and 'abilities' in meaning?

If not general, are they both correct?

-He has operated with so much ability that he has defeated me.
-He has operated with so many abilities that he has defeated me.

What would be the difference in meaning?

When used in the plural, we consider that skills or talents are the focus instead of overall competence or power.
