-We returned to our old school, and Mary could tell John was thinking the same thing as she did. (=as she thought)

-We returned to our old school, and Mary could tell John was thinking the same thing as she was. (=as she was thinking)

Are they both correct and idiomatic?

The second sentence is OK, but you have the option of leaving the final verb off. The sentence isn't good.

Could you give me some suggestions as to how it could be improved? As to the first one, do you think it's not grammatical?
