Cabuya

I generally use the word soga for rope in Spanish although I know there are lots of other words. Recently I heard the term cabuya which, from deduction, meant soga. After looking up the word (at first I thought it was cabulla) I saw that cabuya is century plant cactus which I automatically assumed was related to sisal, a succulent whose fibers are used for rope.

Is cabuya a common word for rope?

Not in Mexico. Here you'll hear "mecate", for a rope made of natural fiber. :)
The others are rarely called "soga", but "cuerda" or "lazo" (sometimes also "reata").
