Why travel in particular in the simple present tense?

'Traveled' (AmE spelling) certainly matches the tense being used in the rest of the sentence and seems appropriate enough, but not the way it is written.
What I would change to make everything sound right is the use of 'carried'. I'm pretty certain that what was mentioned/said was 'I always carry a revolver with me when I travel'.
