-Ash’s evocation of the Black Forest in ‘Gotteschalk’ is very fine, but how many of the public are prepared to endure his theological strictures to come to it?

This come to is not add up to/reach a particular situation. What does it mean?

I believe it means 'to attend' in this instance (be in the audience when Ash gives his evocation). The public can both 'go to' an event and 'come to' an event, depending on the speaker's point of reference. Here the speaker has his reference point "at the event," so the public would be coming to it.
