In English, casual can and often has a positive meaning. It has come to mean, in many cases, comfortable and informal. Is this also the case in Spanish. I suspect it is not.

"Casual" in Spanish means "by chance", it's a "false friend"...
In Spanish you would use "informal" or "de sport" when talking about clothes...

Also "de entrecasa", used in the Southern Cone but also in other countries.

So, could por casualidad be used instead of de chiripa?

Yes, "de chiripa" is colloquial and "por casualidad" is more formal. :)
