This virus has been in the news lately so I wonder if ZIKA has a translation (such as SIDA for AIDS) or is only a medical term in itself

If you check the etymology, the answer is simple. Zika, as opposed to HIV, refers to a geographical locationn. Therefore it is likely to be the same in English as in Spanish,

It's the same in Spanish: "el virus del Zika".

The name "Zika" is not an acronym but refers to the Zika Forest in Uganda.

el zika (common noun) = illness caused by Zika virus
el virus del Zika = the Zika virus
la fiebre del Zika = Zika fever
