Is translated as
You can't leave him here.

Him would be a direct object pronoun. Why not "lo" rather than "le"?
Does it suggest going away from him?

"Lo" is correct, but with "le" is a type of "leísmo" that is extended (all countries but 4 or 5) and accepted. That kind of "leísmo" abhors dealing with people as if they are things.

No le diga nada (correct)
No le deje solo (leísmo, better "no lo deje solo")
