I saw the movie Deadpool last night and I want to describe it to a friend as violent but not gory.

I know the literal meaning of gore is blood, and that's how my spanish dictionary translates it - to sangriento. But when I speak of a gory movie, I mean one that shows gruesome detail - so "blood and guts" not just blood.

If I describe a movie in spanish as "muy violento pero no sangriento" would it be understood to mean a comic book/video game style of violence?

"Una película muy violenta pero no sangrienta" me suena y cuadra con la descripción que diste.

you can clarify it more by concluding the sentence with como los tebeos.

violenta (violence everywhere; some blood)
sangrienta (pretty bloody)
truculenta (guts exposed; necks half cut; bath of blood)

for me:
"es algo sangrienta pero no truculenta".

That's interesting, because truculent means ready to fight or pugnacious or short fused.
I believe in Caribbean Spanish you may hear con poca carnecería.

con poca carnicería = poco sangriento

truculento ---> del latín, truculentus, cruel, atroz
