I don't detect any difference, but when 'so' is used, we tend to dwell on (give emphasis to) the word.

There are differences in how they can fit inside a sentence. For example:

I like it so much that X.
I like it very much, so that X.

One cannot say "I like it very much that X."

One could say "I like it so much, so that X.", but it feels a little odd to repeat "so" in this context.

Aha! You found an example that I failed to find while I was writing my previous post. So we (well, I, anyway) still don't have a context where "so much" and "very much" aren't interchangeable...
