I don't detect any difference, but when 'so' is used, we tend to dwell on (give emphasis to) the word.

¿Me gusta tanto-tantísimo?
¿Me gusta mucho-muchísimo?

Para mí, como la canción de Mecano... "me cuesta tanto olvidarte..."

Una connotación distinta de "me cuesta mucho olvidarte"...

Supongo que es el matiz que anota Rusty... (aunque creo que en español es algo más pronunciado, ¿no?)

There are differences in how they can fit inside a sentence. For example:

I like it so much that X.
I like it very much, so that X.

One cannot say "I like it very much that X."

One could say "I like it so much, so that X.", but it feels a little odd to repeat "so" in this context.

I don't understand the second-to-last comment.

I like it very much that we are friends.
I like it so much that we are friends.

I like it very much that we are friends.
I like it so much that we are friends.

Aha! You found an example that I failed to find while I was writing my previous post. So we (well, I, anyway) still don't have a context where "so much" and "very much" aren't interchangeable...
