How dowe say mantener un vis a vis con alguien? Tener un vis a vis es mantener una relación privada cuando se está en prisión.

Vis a vis is also used in English, but is use may be different. It means, among other things, face to face. Perhaps you can say they maintained a face to face, or tete a tete confidence while in prision,

I think ROBINDESBOIS is talking of the use of this expression in Spain as a category that includes -and I think it's not limited to- conjugal visits.
Everywhere, vis a vis means exactly the same as in English, face to face; but it's much more used the private version of that: tête à tête.

It s usually used in a sexual sense.
