Is "vivia" in "Vivia en Londres durante 5 anos" correct in its use when considering actions in the past that occurred over an extended period of time?

No, if the amount of time is explicit, the right conjugation is preterite. :-)

- Cuando yo era niña, vivía con mis abuelos.
When I was a child, I used to live with my grandparents.
- Hace varios años, vivíamos en Madrid.
Many years ago, we used to live in Madrid.
- Los faraones vivían en el antiguo Egipto.
Pharaohs lived in ancient Egypt.
- ¿Sabes quiénes vivían aquí antes de nosotros?
Do you know who lived here before we came?
