Tener lugar is used with events and it's slightly formal. Basically it's



¿dónde es? = ¿dónde tiene lugar?



I don't have "to take place" associated with "to start" as two examples suggest.


"To hope" doesn't translate into gustar, querer or tener ganas.

But in this case, "pasar" introduces an ambiguity in the meaning, since we also use it for something that is over; so if you say "espero que pase pronto", most people would believe you're expecting something to end soon (like "I hope it passes quickly"). That's why "ocurrir", "suceder", "acontecer" (much more formal), are better choices. :)
