...as in join a club. I would use metricular, but it seems fancy. Dictionaries say liar, but that seem wrong. What is the correct term?

matricular
This thread is old, but I wanted to follow up with a couple more possible options:
darse de alta en el club
apuntarse para el club
hacerse parte del club
hacerse un miembro del club

That's good info David. I thought dar de alta was a term restricted to being discharged as discharged from a hospital.

Unless I'm mistaken, I'm pretty sure it can be used both ways.

"Darse de alta" means to sign up, and it's an action you do yourself.
And "dar de alta" means to discharge someone from a hospital, because they're better. Someone else (a doctor) does it for you. :)
- Me di de alta ayer. -->I signed up yesterday.
- Me dieron de alta ayer. -->I was discharged from hospital (by them).
