I remember seeing a brilliantly funny Argentine film donkey's years ago, it was about a pleasant chap who loses his job, I think. He helps a lady whose car has broken down, does some welding I think. She can't afford to repay him so she offers him a huge dog which she insists is a potential pedigree champion. After many hilariousl adventures the dog does eventually become Argentine national champion, and earns thousands in stud kennel breeding fees.

As I recall the chap is a lonely widower and he also meets an attractive new lady friend, so it's a happy ending all round!

Somebody will know it, I'm sure!

Yes, I agree, the movie was wonderful, and it was called "El Perro".

Yes thanks, it came to me yesterday. On UK tv it was shown as "Bombón el Perro". The scene where the naïve "Bombón" has an encounter with a scruffy perra caliente was so 'tenderly romantic' it cracks me up whenever I think of it. It was donkeys' years ago but I think it's only been shown once, probably they won't pay to put sub-titles or dubs on (it was in the original Spanish), pity really.
