Las Posadas means inns. In the article, they said it was a holiday. Either the article is wrong and you are right, or the article is actually right... :P
Everyone's right. Posada can mean:

posada (un lugar para hospedarse) = inn
posada (una celebración navideña) = Christmas party (roughly, it's really a Catholic celebration)
posada (pedir posada) = lodging

I thought it was a holiday, but I guess it's more of an party.

Yes, a posada at least on my country is partier than a holiday, because the Mexican's people celebrate more the party than a religion holiday, then as Poli said before there are alots kinds of parties or celebrations on my country but the people does not celebrate the holiday as you have read in other website.
