cantar - verb - to sing. Look up cantar in the dictionary (http://www.tomisimo.org/dictionary/spanish_english/cantar)
Es bonito cantar en las noches con toda la familia.
Singing at night with the whole family is fun.

this is the verb. the noun, singer is el/la cantante right? and song is la canción?
I know it is because they are several of my additional vocab of this chapter. cantar is one too.

Yes, the word song is a verb and singer is a object.

Yes, the word song is a verb and singer is a object.Song is a noun. Singer is a noun (can be used as a subject or an object). Sing is the verb.

Just to nitpick, cantante is "singer" as in artist, and cantor/cantora is "singer" as in vocalist. :)
