This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word (http://daily.tomisimo.org/) for March 11, 2009
estreno - masculine noun (el) - new release, first appearance, debut, premiere, first performance. Look up estreno in the dictionary (http://www.tomisimo.org/dictionary/spanish_english/estreno)
Por lo general, si quieres rentar un estreno, te va a costar más que rentar una película más vieja.
If you want to rent a movie, a new release is generally going to cost you more than renting an older movie.

So would that have the feel of saying something like "today I am debuting my new shoes"?

@Lou Ann: Maybe it is so, in a way. :D
"Estrenar" means to wear something that is brand new.
"Estreno" as a noun, is the first time a show (movie, play, etc.) is performed.

Not really, because estrenar in Spanish is very common. It's used all the time the first time you wear something you just bought or the first time you use anything that you have just received.
estrenar = to use/wear for the first time

I never heard the word primicia before, but RAE implies that it means first
fruits literally or metaphorically. The first fruit of the season, or the first fruit of our efforts. It's related to estreno but different.
Anoche estrenó "Abrazos rotos" la nueva película de Pedro Almódovar. Recivió malas notas.

We use "primicia" as the first news about something. "Estreno" is the first public exhibition of a show/movie/play...
(Estación de radio): "Sólo en esta estación tenemos la primicia del estreno de la obra de teatro "El Buen Canario", dirigida por John Malkovich".
(Radio broadcasting): "Only in this station we have the first news about the debut of the play "The Good Canary", directed by John Malkovich".
