This is my attempt to fix them in my mind.
Why? = Por qué?= literally "what for?" = 2 short words, Accent "É" because it is a question
El por qué (¿= el porqué ?) = the Why = the reason or cause.
Porque = because = response to "Why?"

It's easy man, the sentences of the word Por qué and the other one is when you will do a question into of the Spanish, then you should to use the word Por qué in the case of the English is Why, now in the other usage of the word Porque but the word completely together without separations in the word, you should porque in a sentence straight in the case of English is because, I hope that you can understand me with this explanation.

Here is a way that my spanish teacher said to remember it...
"Porque" is a simpler way of saying "because"
Porque is one word; because is one word.
By default, por qué is equivalent to "why."
Hope this helps.

Yes as you have said, exactly is the way more correct to say the sentences in equivalence, Why (Porque) Because ( Por que) they're completely the same.
In Spanish is easier to know the means to both sentences, because they are used relatively in the phrases or noun, it's no too used in English at least in the way that I've use the word since I'm used English.;)
