This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word (http://daily.tomisimo.org/) for August 30, 2009

carnicería (feminine noun (la)) — butcher shop. Look up carnicería in the dictionary (http://www.tomisimo.org/dictionary/spanish_english/carniceria)

¿Puedes ir a la carnicería para comparar carne molida?
Can you go to the butcher shop to buy some ground beef?

Una carnicería es también una terrible matanza. La idea más similar en inglés yo creo que es slaughter.

And something else: In England people speak of minced meat, and in Spain we say carne picada.

Would minced meat/carne picada be this?

Yo también usaría "carne molida".

Btw., how do you say "carne deshebrada"?

I'm pretty sure I'd call that shredded beef.

No, that's carne molida.

Minced meat it's just bits of meat, maybe little squares but not necessarily

Well on this side of Atlantic too. I know Cubans call it the same way...

What is ground beef for you?

This is also known as ropa vieja.

"Ropa vieja" is the dish (once it's cooked in a tomato and vegetables sauce)... when it's only boiled and shredded, it's called "carne deshebrada". :)

Is there a difference between "carne deshebrada" and "carne machaca"?

And not to be confused with mincemeat: dried fruit with fat.

Machaca is a specialty from the North of Mexico. It's meat (usually beef) that is very finely pulled apart (much more so than carne deshebrada), pounded to death, and then dried. It is then reconstituted and used in various dishes. Machaca can refer to the meat or one of several dishes prepared with it.

Nunca me gustaba las carnicerías, siempre me encantan las pesquerías/pesqueras.;) Porque los pecs son del mar:P
¿cómo se dice fishery? Es dónde cortan los peces, como la carnicería.

@Tacuba: As David said, "carne deshebrada" is fresh boiled and shredded meat and "machaca" is finely shredded dried meat.

@Bob: Places where they sell fish are called "pescaderías".
