Hey, my son opened his fruit loops cereal and in it was a bilingual Shrek booklet. with the new movie coming out, I guess it a promotional thing and also reaching out to the Hispanic community. I learned a few new words...

Although, imigration, or more specifically illegal immigration, is a touchy issue now, people needn't get so upset (if they do) about this reaching out for the bilingual market. A lot of the reason is because these products are exported to the South American countries, or even produced there and marketed back into Los Estados Unidos. So it might just be simple economics, more than any conspiracy to force people into multiculturalism.
*just in case that thought crossed anyones mind. :)

Another point is that speaking as a linguist, there is no way you could possibly replace English with Spanish even if you wanted to. The current worldwide socio-economic situation wouldn't allow it. I don't know what so many americans are so uptight about.

I agree. It's nothing but pride and arrogance. They don't need to go to the ESL extreme, but it wouldn't hurt anyone (American) to know Spanish as a second language. I was surprised how many more English words made sense once I learned more about the Spanish, (Latin) origin. Writing poetry as I do, I am kind of enamored with words anyway, so learning Spanish has only increased my vocabulary.

Besides, 60 percent of the worlds population speaks some form of Spanish. All that would happen really if more people became bilingual, is that we might all communicate better. What could that hurt?

Kudos, David, for doing more than your share to help.

I totally agree the latin roots, prefixes and suffixes have helped my spelling and help me to understand some words in English that I've never seen before. I don't totally give the credit to Spanish becuase I took a latin roots class, but Spanish helps too.
