Halloween

I have usually seen the spelling of this word as "Halloween", but I have noticed my British friends rather spell it "Hallow'een". Would anyone please tell where the apostrophe comes from or how was it lost? :thinking:

They should be spelling it "Hallowe'en", short for "Hallow Even", short for "All Hallows' Evening". I think "hallow" means saint, but it's very archaic. The cognate adjective "hallowed" is used in the Lord's prayer (Padre Nuestro) in the Authorised Version.

The word Halloween is only use inside of the United States or also there are another places where is originating the word.

It like here in Mexico instead of use Halloween is used Noche de Brujas or Dia de muertos ( Death day ).
