I have always used purifcar. Depurar is a new word for me.
You can definitely say el agua está purificado y se lo puede tomar sin riesco.

I don't think "depurar" is a widely used word for purify.....

In Spain we say "depurar" instead of "purificar" (yo purificaría un alma :thinking: ).

Tenemos depuradoras para depurar el agua. Después se potabiliza añadiendo cloro y otras porquerías :D
