For the meaning given: reconciliation
This meaning also applies to the English word conciliation, but it isn't the first meaning we attach to the word.

This meaning also applies to the English word conciliation, but it isn't the first meaning we attach to the word. But reconciliation means the bringing back together of people who were originally in agreement, then fell out. For example, a married couple split up but are later reconciled. As I understand it, he actually means conciliation

This is used when somebody is fired for whatever reason and they come to an agreement, in such a way that both benefit from the situation.

But reconciliation means the bringing back together of people who were originally in agreement, then fell out. For example, a married couple split up but are later reconciled. As I understand it, he actually means conciliation :thinking:Hmmm. I'm not reconciled :) that that is the only meaning of the word. Although I agree that the situation you mentioned can be called a reconciliation, the settling of a dispute doesn't always imply that the parties once agreed on what is disputed. It simply means that there was a process whereby the two have become agreeable, or compatible, and the dispute is over.
If we rely on etymologies alone, the two words can be used as you stated. But the dictionaries give additional meanings for each of the words.

But the dictionaries give additional meanings for each of the words.Mine doesn't, but maybe it's another UK/USA difference. :)
