there is a word used in the southwest U.S. (so probably also in northern Mexico) for the appearance of rain falling from a cloud but not reaching the ground as seen from a distance. i seem to remember it starting with V. thanks. ron

Hi pennron and welcome.
Interesting question you've got there. I've never heard of such a thing, but hopefully someone else has. If I get a chance I'll try to research it and post back here to let you know.

But not fair.....he probably is not from a dry/arid region of the world. Unless you are, you wouldn't know of this phenomenon!

It looks like the word virga exists in both Spanish (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virga_%28Meteorolog%C3%ADa%29) and English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virga).
(sorry no accent keys on my laptop)
When posting a message here, you can use the accents popup menu in the editor to add accents to your posts. :) It's not quite as convenient as using the keyboard, but it works.
