Hola a todos:

En un ejercicio dice "¿Quién era Cristobal Colón?" ¿no debería ser "¿Quién fue Cristobal Colón? ¿O es como preguntar "¿Cómo era la fiesta?"=What was the party like? Era muy elegante y ¿Cómo fue la fiesta?=How was the party Fue muy elegante.

Al usar el imperfecto, ¿pide más información?

-¿Quién fue Cristobal Colón?
-Descubrió el Nuevo Mundo

-¿Quién era Cristobal Colón?
-Era muy famoso por descubrir el Nuevo Mundo. En las tierras que encontró había...

I guess when using "era" you go on describing his characteristics, and when using "fue" you go on describing his accomplishments?

- ¿Quién era Cristóbal Colón?
- Era un navegante que descubrió América (used in biographies, a long time, all his life he was/él era).

- ¿Fue Cristóbal Colón importante en su época?
- Sí, porque él fue quien descubrió América (one day he did).

I wouldn't say "¿quién fue C.C.?". :)

Pero yo diría: "¿quién descubrió América?" porque es un hecho puntual. O también podría decir: "¿quién ganó el concurso de Eurovisión el año pasado?, por el mismo motivo. Pero si pregunto por personas que han sido famosas a lo largo de su vida, diré: "¿quién era Cervantes/Shakespeare/Milton/Lincoln/...?" También diría: "¿Quién escribió El Quijote?".

De todos modos, así como en España usamos más el pretérito perfecto compuesto, vosotros usáis más el perfecto simple. Mientras que yo diría: "¿cómo te ha ido el examen?", vosotros decís: ¿cómo te fue el examen?".

Creo que el uso de los tiempos verbales varía de una zona a otra. :)

Estoy básicamente de acuerdo con Irma: Para preguntar por un personaje histórico, mi primera elección sería "¿quién era Cristóbal Colón?" y preferiría el pasado simple para un hecho puntual ("¿Quién descubrió América?"), pero visto que ya está muerto, no me molestaría que se preguntara "¿Quién fue Cristóbal Colón?". :)

@Irma: por cierto, nosotros diríamos "¿Cómo te fue en el examen?" (no sé por qué) :D

-¿De veras? ¿Cómo fue? (ser/ir)
-(fue) Muy divertida/buena. (Había/Hubo...) Deberías haber ido

I wouldn't ask "¿cómo fue/era la fiesta?"... it would be understood, but doesn't feel natural to me. :thinking:

I'd ask "¿cómo estuvo/estaba la fiesta?". However "estaba" would mean that the party changed at some moment and you ask what it was like until it changed.
· La fiesta estaba muy aburrida, pero llegó el mariachi y todos se animaron.
· La fiesta estaba muy divertida hasta que llegó el mariachi y los invitados se fueron.

"¿Cómo estuvo la fiesta?" asks your opinion on a party that's over.

In Colombia the people when are in a party, they say, let's go to the Pollada.
Vamos a la pollada.
And well just they telling you.
How was the Pollada funny or bored it?

You can see that there're miles to ways to say the same in the same language that it's the Spanish.

It's result some curios right?:)
