Fuego is fire. It can be found in nature (not man-made). When you talk about fire you're talking about it in general.
Lumbre is speaking more about the light of the flame, but can be used to talk about man-made fire as opposed to natural fires. :twocents:

The main difference is that "lumbre" is made by will, and "fuego" can be started by will or not.

In Spain, lumbre is quite a poetic word, additionally of what Rusty said.

Well in the Spanish the fire is very common and correct in the grammar instead of lumbre is used of colloquial way for the Mexican, inclusive that word isn't very appropriate in the people with high level, after they that word is less than a usages here in my country.

It seems to me that part of the essence of "lumbre" has to do with illumination: "alumbrar", to give light or shed light. Whereas it appears that a lot of the usage of the word "fuego" has to do with destruction, consumption, firing weapons, and passion (not necessarily love): things that consume.
