Oír vs. Escuchar

I've always said "escuchar música", aunque se usa de las dos maneras.
Claro... just that I've heard it always as oír in my experience.

If you say "Me gusta oir música" and we don't know nothing more about you, you will likely be a foreigner or an intelectual, or something like that(a little bit exagerated). It's easy and common for someone that knows that is speaking with a person that is from a foreign language or a different slang, to speak in a more neutral manner or just in a different way from the one he is used to speak with. I mean, in an artificial way for him.
Actually, I believe that around here the word that appears the most(is this right?) after "escuchar" is "música".

It was an idiot answer to your correction, not to the topic :P (I have nothing more to say about escuchar: all the sounds you percieve with or without volunteer attention, are "escuchar" around here.

I had the same question you did laepelba just now. God bless old threads! :) I had never heard of Escuchar. Oír, oigo, oiga and oyendo is used by family and friends around me. This was great info for me thanks!
