can anybody give a more informal conjunction meaning the same?It is a complex subordinator and the Oxford dictionary gives it as in so far as, although others give insofar as and in-so-far as. Anyway, it normally means to the extent that, and can often be substituted by so far as, though or since, depending on context.

In that is commonly used. For example:
They are simlar in so far as they have the same occupation in live in the same town
Thy are similar in that they have the same...
