Hoy quiero hablar de Ramadán aquí en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos - ¡Lo odio!

Durante el día, todo está cerrado entonces me quedo en casa. Es aburrido.

Yo no soy musulmán y yo no se divierten. Sin embargo, es termina mañana. Estoy feliz!

Everything is closed in the country I live in because it is Ramadan. Ramadan is a Muslim religious holiday and I live in a muslim country. During Ramadan Muslims fast (do not eat or drink or smoke!) during daylight hours, so everything is closed.
Ramadan lasts one month and is nearly finished (tomorrow is the last day)!

Now I will try to say that in Spanish!

Then when you are living there a great diversity of religious between the people and they keep respect to the church laws.
It's result interesting, already here in my country there are a diversity of religious and the people don't turn to respect the laws made by the church, here when is religious holiday, the people drink, eat everything they have in the their hands, and we make our live the most normal as all the days, only when the government gave a law called La ley seca is when the people respect in the daylight all the I told you before.

Then the countries are very different, and your country is more respectful than my country, here in México the people aren't respectful in anything.

So I think its less a matter of understanding, but more a matter of being worried about going to jail! :)

Mañana es el comienzo del Eid. Tenemos un largo fin de semana. Aquí usualmente el fin de semana es viernes y sabado no sabado y domingo, pero esta semana es miercoles a domingo! En jueves por la noche, mi esposa y yo vamos a fiesta de piscina en la casa grande de nuestra amiga. En viernes por la noche vamos para a tomaremos unos tragos y comeremos para a otra amigas cumpleaños.

Well, where I live is an Islamic country and is fairly free with that in mind, when it comes to religious holidays (specifically Ramadan) it is actually ILLEGAL to eat or drink in public during the day. So I think its less a matter of understanding, but more a matter of being worried about going to jail! :)

Mañana es el comienzo del Eid. Tendremos un largo fin de semana. Aquí usualmente el fin de semana es viernes y sabado, no sabado y domingo, ¡pero esta semana es de miercoles a domingo! El jueves por la noche, mi esposa y yo vamos [a ir] a una fiesta de piscina en la casa grande de una amiga(de una amiga (of a friend) better than de nuestra amiga (of our friend), because that way you're talking as if we know who you're talking about). El viernes por la noche vamos a tomar unos tragos y comeremos en/durante el cumpleaños de otra amiga.

Hoy conduciremos a Dubai. Es una hora de distancia en el coche. Reuniremos los amigos para el brunch. Podríamos ir a Dubai Mall, si tenemos tiempo. ¡Dubai Mall es enorme!

*When I write my practice text out, I normally check it in a translator to see if I am at least partially correct. I know I cant rely on translators, but in this example Google Translator wanted to put "nos" before conduciremos and reuniremos. I thought "nos" was used with reflexive verbs only? And if so, I think I have a different idea as to what reflexive verbs are!!*

"Pronombres átonos" (me, te se, nos, etc.) are not only used with reflexive verbs, but also pronominals. For instance, "conducir (http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/SrvltConsulta?TIPO_BUS=3&LEMA=conducir)", if you check that verb in a dictionary, you'll see:

1. tr. Llevar, transportar de una parte a otra. 2. tr. Guiar o dirigir hacia un lugar.
3. tr. Guiar o dirigir a un objetivo o a una situación. U. t. c. intr.
4. tr. Guiar o dirigir un negocio o la actuación de una colectividad.
5. tr. Esp. Guiar un vehículo automóvil.

8. prnl. Manejarse, portarse, comportarse, proceder de una u otra manera, bien o mal.

So, you have to look for the meaning that you need. You see 5 means drive a car, that's what you need, and there is not the mark "prnl" (pronominal) as you can see in 8. A verb pronominal is conjugated with the "pronombres átonos". So:

Conducir (tr. = transitivo): Conduzco un coche - I drive a car.
Conducirse (prnl = pronominal): ¿Cómo conducirse en las fiestas? = ¿Cómo comportarse en las fiestas? - How to behave at parties?

The same with "reunir (http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/SrvltConsulta?TIPO_BUS=3&LEMA=reunir)" and "reunirse":

2. tr. Juntar, congregar, amontonar. U. t. c. prnl.
3. tr. Juntar determinadas cosas para coleccionarlas o con algún otro fin.

2: Reunirse, pronominal = meet

Me voy a reunir con unos amigos - I'm going to meet some friends.

3: Reunir (tr.): gather, raise, collect

Necesito reunir más datos para mi estudio - I need gather more data for my study.

Ahora que pienso, si estudias español latinoamericano, creo que no dicen "conducir", sino "guiar". ¿Me equivoco? :thinking:

Entonces "conducir" está bien. "Guiar" significa "to guide". :)

"Brunch" es una extraña palabra (ahora de moda en México) que junta el desayuno con el "lunch" del medio día (breakfast + lunch) . En los restaurantes se sirven platos que se antojan (apetecen) tanto para desayunar como para comer. Aquí se sirven de las siete u ocho de la mañana hasta la una o dos de la tarde, normalmente dispuestos en buffet. :)

Y en México "conducir" puede usarse sin problema, pero la palabra más común es "manejar". "Guiar" me suena a Centroamérica y el Caribe, pero no estoy segura de si se usa así. :thinking:

"Brunch" es una extraña palabra (ahora de moda en México) que junta el desayuno con el "lunch" del medio día (breakfast + lunch) .A portmanteau word, like this zorse, a hybrid of a zebra and horse. :)
