Would somebody mind to check this sentence, please? Thanks. :)
English would be substituted by Hindi as the official language and, as the country was divided in states, most of them having their own language, each regional language also gained the status of official language in each state.

Sounds good; "...divided into states" would be better.

@irmamar: You might also consider this alternative:
Hindi would have replaced English as the only official language, but the country had been divided into separate states, each having their own particular language. These regional languages also gained the status of being an official language in their respective states. :)

Future or past? Other than that and Hermit's point it's fine IMO.

I left the one I had written but I changed the tenses and that "into". :D
Anyway, what I've written is too long and I'll have to summarize it again (about 100 words are enough and I've written almost 300). :impatient:
