Thanks. :)A forfeit is something you lose as a penalty for a crime. So somebody's lands were confiscated as a punishment for being disloyal. (Your sentence does not quite make sense).
It can also be used in a more trivial sense: A prisoner forfeits the right to vote in an election (i.e. as a further punishment, a right to vote is removed from him)
And also in cards games. In some games, if you lose, you forfeit something - usually an item of clothing :eek::D

Well, what you wrote above is not actually a complete sentence. It is grammatically incorrect, so hopefully the book includes a noun for the sentence.
Anyway, forfeit in this case means lost as a penalty of some action.
The other common use is in sports as a verb.
"The team had to forfeit the game because they only had 3 players."
In this sense, they had to give up the victory and lost the game as a penalty for not meeting the rules of the game.
Hope that helps.

forfeit as a verb = ceder/abandonar los derechos a/de algo.
forfeit as a noun = pena/penalidad

I'll write the complet sentence:
Problems arose when Philip A. abandoned John's cause and, as his feudal overlord, declared his French lands forfeit.
Abandoned, maybe?
