¿Cuánto sale? vs. ¿Cuánto cuesta?
 

I am an American, but I was raised in the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica. In the DR, when asking how much something costs, they would say, "a cuanto sale?" or "cuanto sale?" In Costa Rica, however, they use "cuanto cuesta?" and I never heard anyone in CR say "cuanto sale?" When looking them up, they are both correct. I am just wondering if they are regional, or if it was just purely which was more common. A Costa Rican told me that they had never heard "canto sale" before. I find that very unusual. Is "cuanto sale" more of a Caribbean phrase, maybe?

"¿En/a cuánto sale?" is said in Mexico as well, but it's rather colloquial.

"¿Cuánto cuesta?" is the most common and most neutral way to ask the price of something in most countries, I guess. :)

1.-¿A cuánto sale la tele?*

*Generalmente esta expresión la usamos cuando presuponemos que el precio es alto. (España)

2.-¿Cuánto vale la tele?

3.-¿Cuánto cuesta la tele?

Por aquí se usan estas tres expresiones.

Como estamos hablando de distintos países, te daré otra visión, En los del Río de la Plata, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, es normal preguntar ¿cuánto cuesta? cuando nos dirigimos directamente el vendedor, ej: ¿cuánto cuesta la camisa azul que está en la vidriera?. Sin embargo preguntar a otra persona por lo mismo, un amigo quizá, le preguntaremos, ¿cuánto sale esa camisa azul que tenés (tienes) puesta?. Aclaro, tenés es la forma que conjugamos la segunda persona del singular por estos lares.

jejejejejeje. Yo digo, "¿cuanto cuesta?" Pero yo soy de Guatemala. :-) Yo nunca he oido "¿cuanto sale?"

Pero si viajaras a otro país y alguien te preguntara ¿cuánto sale?, refiriéndose a cualquier artículo, ¿lo entenderías?

Le pregunté a mi amigo de Mexico y él me dijo que usan "cuanto cuesta" y no la otra.:twocents:

@Caliber: Mostly true. But there are people who can say "¿en/a cuánto sale?"
A more colloquial question can be "¿a cómo sale?"

These are all questions you can hear in the market to ask how much the kilo of tomatoes is (there may be a few more variations):
· ¿En cuánto sale el kilo de jitomates?
· ¿A cómo sale el kilo de jitomates?
· ¿A cómo el kilo de jitomates? (probably the most colloquial one)
· ¿En cuánto está el kilo de jitomate?
· ¿A cuánto está el kilo de jitomate?
· ¿Cuánto cuesta el kilo de jitomates? (the most formal of all)

I often hear a cómo está/están. I don't know if it's regional, but it is very common NYC and surroundings.

"¿A cómo está?" is quite common as well. :)
