What can I say? I have read books in several languages, and I don't give up very easily. In fact I have only ever given up on two books: Musil, Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften, and Joyce, Ulysses. For the latter, I think I may have a problem with Irish English, where they use the same words but with subtle differences which to me makes the sentences unnecessarily and pretentiously difficult. To me, that is not a feature of great writing. Anyway - I'd far rather read Homer's Odyssey - at least that is not stream-of-consciousness rambling.

Have you read The Dead and Araby from his book of short stories The Dubliners? I was moved by them when I read them in my college years. They are beautifully written, and I recommend them. I have never been able to read Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake, but I have heard excerpts read aloud by actors and they seemed to make the work a lot more comprehensible.

@Perikles: I started reading it in a really good Spanish translation, but I couldn't handle it. I only wish I could read Homer's story in the original language as I suppose you can.

Here you can find short stories with different levels. There aren't a lot, but enough to test your level and enjoy reading.

Yes, but it's hard work. Despite that, to me it's the most wonderful poetry ever.
