Thanks for all who have chimed in so far.

To clarify, I'm not asking about including or excluding the pronoun yo in speech or writing nor how inflection implies it. (The discussion of inflection is interesting, though!) What I'm trying to do is get a sense of what the phrase "el yo" invokes in native Spanish speakers and whether it brings up the same idea as "the self" does for native English speakers. I started in a more roundabout way hoping not to bias the response.

Permítenme intentar de modo relacionado. Si se dice "Me parece que ese hombre se comporta desde una perspectiva sin yo" ¿tiene sentido la afirmación? Si es así, ¿qué expresa para ti?
