El Día de Hispanidad

Here in New York on the Sunday before Columbus day (this year Oct. 12) there's a really good parade on 5th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The Día de Hispanidad parade is a whole lot more fun than most parades. Groups from all the Spanish speaking nations dress up in traditional costumes. Some have their own bands and dance native dances: Cumbia, Tango, Cha Cha,Merengue, etc. Peru and Bolivia usually have the most elaborate presentiations and the best dancing and outfits (although Panama is pretty good too,) and each year Mexico gives bigger presentations. Is El Día de Hispanidad celebrated in other nations? Is there a similar presentation is Spain?

Does Día de la Hispanidad mean "Spanish Day?"
Well, I now understand it.

It really means the day of Hispanic culture which is a very positive way
of looking at Columbus Day and the subsequent Spanish conquest of the Americas which is a controversial subject matter especially in Peru and Mexico. The positive thing that cannot be denied about the conquest is the rich new creole/mestizo culture that it gave birth to. Latin America is a wonderful mix of Spanish, Native American, African, Asian and North
American culture. El Día de Hispanidad or Día de la Rasa celebrates this phenomenon.
