"Se desvelaban" would be "they stayed up late".
"They outdid themselves" = hicieron su mejor trabajo hicieron mejor que jamás hayan hecho (Chileno's suggestions are good too)

In colloquial (but socially accepted) Mexican Spanish, I would have said "se lucieron" (the idea is they did a brilliant work).
