I'm Wearing...Settle an Argument
Hi guys!
My co-workers and I are "arguing" about a sentence I wrote and I wanted to see what you guys have to say about it. The sentence is: Estoy llevando los vaqueros. (I'm wearing jeans) o Llevo vaqueros. I'm being told that this is WRONG and I should say either: Traigo puesto los vaqueros o Llevo puesto los vaqueros Since junior high, I have always been taught that "llevar" means "to wear". They're saying it means "to take" (I know that it has multiple meanings). I'm wanting to use the "to wear" version of the word. Please help settle our "discussion". It's a friendly discussion by the way. Thanks!

I'm most familiar with the Mexican version of Spanish, and I'd say one of the following:
"Estoy llevando ...." definitely sounds wrong to me. Hope that helps you win the "discussion"

sorry, but I disagreee with you Tomisimo
For Spain: You're right bleitzow, but also your friends. For "I'm wearing jeans" I would say "llevo vaqueros", because the "puesto" is somehow implicit. Don't say "estoy llevando" it sounds as you change your jeans every hour. RAE says "llevar" implies "traer puesto", so you can say it or not. llevar:accepcion numer 9 tr. Traer puesto el vestido, la ropa, etc. But normally this is the answer of a question, and the question usually use "puesto" or its is understandable "¿que llevas puesto?" ¿Qué ropa llevas (puesta)? Phone conversation of a concerned mother to his daughter (who is going to a party) Tienes que volver a las XX horas... ¡Nada provocativo!. Deja de agobiarme mamá. For Spain, both sentences (llevo una camisa, llevo puesta una camisa, llevo vaqueros, llevo puestos unos vaqueros) are OK. So I can't say wich one is wrong. But I will never say "Yo traigo puesto" but " Yo llevo puesto" because your clothes always go (and not come) with you !! You can use "traer puesto" with other persons who are coming to you, but not for yourself. (I rarely use "traer puesto", I always say "lleva" or "lleva puesto": "La modelo lleva puesto un vestido..." or "Mira, Juan se acerca llevando sus sucios vaqueros") saludos Last edited by sosia; January 12, 2008 at 01:44 AM. |

Elaina, saying "I disagree" doesn't implie that Tomisimo is wrong, only that I have another opinion. and my second phrase was "For Spain:"
Saludos Last edited by sosia; January 12, 2008 at 01:55 PM. |
