Dar mucho de sí
I think it means: to have many positive points.
It this correct? Is the phrase used often? If not how would you say it. I would say: tener muchos aspectos positivos, but that's a direct translation from English.

In Mexico is very widely used, but mostly for material things.
"Dar de sí" = estirarse Like when new shoes are a bit too tight and after using them for a while they are already comfortable. I think you guessed right the figurative sense, Poli.

En inglés tenemos que usar has positive points(or aspects).

Also make a great effort (to do or to get something):

Does "you gave yourself to the task" or " you gave yourself much to the task" ring a bell in English? Also: something will give, meaning that will become loose. |

So da mucho de sí means has a lot going for it which is another way of
saying has positive aspects or has an up side.
