I think it should be action, not actions, and (possibly) comes from watching films. 'Action' in this sense is when anything interesting has happened, and you turn up at the wrong time and miss it. For example, you turn up late at a party when there has been a fight or a police raid earlier, but all is quiet when you get there afterwards. You say you have missed all the action.
