¿El tortillero podría ser el "salvamanteles"? Una pieza de mimbre, madera o acero para evitar que se estropee la mesa o el mantel al poner cazuelas o fuentes demasiado calientes en la mesa.

No, Irma... los que dices, son objetos planos. Un tortillero es un recipiente... nuestro equivalente de una cesta para pan.
Los hay tejidos de palma, de plástico, de nieve seca (unicel), etc...
