Bacalao
This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for December 29, 2009
bacalao (masculine noun (el)) — cod. Look up bacalao in the dictionary En esta Navidad, comimos bacalao frito. This Christmas, we ate fried cod. Mi papá siempre me daba una cucharada de aceite de hígado de bacalao en las noches. Mi dad always gave me a spoonful of cod liver oil at night.

No estoy completamente seguro pero pienso que bacalao es el pescado
salado y secado. Cuando es fresco tiene otro nombre---abadejo. Cuando está bien preparado, el bacalao es muy sabroso. Me gustan albóndigas de bacalao y los franceses preparen algo llamado brandade o brandada en español que tambien me gusta. Bacalao es una palabra muy despectiva para una mujer desagradable entre hispanos caribeños por lo menos e imagino en otras partes del mundo hispano tambien.

Abadejo means bacalao, but bacalao is not only the fish dried and salted, but also when it's alive. We say "bacalao fresco" if it's not dried and salted. Nobody here says "abajejo" (sólo en los crucigramas ).
Here that music techno and insistent is called "bacalao". |

Hmm...cortar el bacalao.
Thanks Irmamar. Locally (I mean north-east coast United States) we differentiate codfish from baccalá (the Italian word for bacalao.) This may not be true in the rest of the country. I was under the impression that in Spain they differentiate it as well. Now I know better. I know that in Latin America bacalao and bacalao fresco are the correct words
